Early History

Lagos, originally known as Eko, was inhabited by the Awori subgroup of the Yoruba people before Portuguese explorers arrived in the late 15th century. The Portuguese named the area Lagos, meaning "lakes" in Portuguese, due to its network of lagoons and waterways. The area quickly became an important trading post, especially for the Atlantic slave trade.

Climate

Lagos has a tropical savanna climate characterized by two distinct seasons: the wet season and the dry season.

  • Wet Season

The wet season runs from April to October, with the heaviest rainfall typically occurring in June and July. During this period, the city experiences high humidity and frequent thunderstorms. Average temperatures range from 24°C (75°F) to 29°C (84°F).

  • Dry Season

The dry season spans from November to March and is dominated by the Harmattan, a dry and dusty trade wind from the Sahara Desert. The weather during this season is generally hot and dry, with lower humidity levels. Average temperatures range from 22°C (72°F) to 33°C (91°F).
